Jesus and Storms

John 14:6:

“Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Trust Jesus and ask him for help when we are scared.

Attention Grabber – about 10 minutes

Bowl filled with water, various objects that both sink and float, including a tiny homemade boat.

Set the objects out around the bowl. With each object ask, “Will this _____ sink or float?” Get the kids to vote on each object with a show of hands, and then test it. Save the boat for last.

Ask, “Can a boat sink?” Let the kids offer answers.  Make a “storm” in your bowl and swamp your boat, which may or may not capsize. Ask them to try to remember seeing a big wind storm on Okanagan Lake and ask them if it seemed scary.  Some of them may have been on a lake when it got windy, and maybe they were scared.

Say, “Today we are going to learn about a time when Jesus was in a boat with his disciples and a big storm came up. Let’s see what happened.”

Watch DVD & discuss – about 5 to 8 minutes

Review what was seen in the DVD. Ask, “What did the disciples do when the storm came up?” “Where was Jesus?” “What did Jesus say to the disciples?” “Why do you think he said that?” “What did Jesus do?”

Retell the Story – about 10 minutes

Demonstrate all the actions first and make sure they can do them as melodramatically as possible! Remind them that when you mention these words in the story they are to do the corresponding action.

Short Discussion – 5 minutes

Say, “This story is about a big storm, and Jesus having the power to make the storm stop. What else is this story about?” Kids can put up their hands and answer.

Say, “The disciples were afraid they would drown. Jesus was with them, so they didn’t need to be afraid. When is it a good time to ask Jesus for help?”

Memory Verse – 5 minutes

The kids have been working on this verse for a few weeks now, so should know it fairly well. Say it with them. Once they are able to say it, see if they can do “the wave” while each saying a word. You may need to let them read it off a paper.

“Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Craft – about 10 minutes

Make miniature sail boats with the materials and instructions provided.

Pray – 2 minutes

Gather the kids around you and say the following prayer for them before you let them go:

“I pray this blessing over each one of you.

Each of you is precious in God’s sight.

God sees you every minute of every day, he knows how you feel and what you are thinking, and he loves you.

I pray that you will come to know and love and trust Jesus with all your heart for all your days.

May the Lord bless you and protect you.

May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.

May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.
